Cabinet and Door Edge Pulls - Latest Trends and New Product Lines in 2020.

Back-mounted “edge” pulls (aka tab pulls) are really becoming a thing in cabinet design trends in 2020. I am going to explain why and how to use these. Like many other trends, this one has its roots in European clean designs. European kitchens tend to be modern and utilitarian in style and this trend has become widely adopted now on the American landscape for kitchen cabinets.

Pure “minimalist” style doors and knobs

The pure “minimalist” would always say “less is more”. Straight lines and flat surfaces dominate in this style. There are no carvings, no “raised panel” doors or drawers in these kitchens. The kitchen from a distance looks like a bunch of perfectly arranged flat rectangle shapes - the doors and drawers. The variety comes from the material of the surfaces. They can be made from natural wood or veneers, or painted MDF, or melamine type durable surfaces.

Some kitchens even eliminate visible hardware completely. In this type of kitchen, there is typically a notch behind the drawer or door that you grasp from behind. Or another option is to use a touch latch that will spring open a door or drawer if you push on the front of it… But therein lies the rub and the reason why edge pulls are the perfect solution for these clean modern kitchens!!

Ultra-modern kitchen edge pulls

The ultra-modern and minimal kitchen that has no hardware at all might look really cool when it is brand new and first installed. But, funnily enough… people actually cook in their kitchens, and cooking can get pretty messy at times!! Everybody knows that our hands get covered in all kinds of various materials when crafting a nice meal. Cooking oils, juices from meat, flour, you name it, our hands get covered in this stuff. Now imagine you are in the midst of all this and you need to open one of your drawers or doors! Do you want a big smudge of olive oil on the front of your cabinet surfaces?!? No, of course you don’t! The solution - THE EDGE PULL!!!

What do edge pulls do?

Edge pulls accomplish two essential things: 1. They provide a metal ‘drawer pull’ surface that you can grasp to open a door or a drawer so that your messy hands don’t have to touch the surface of your cabinets. 2. Next, edge pulls mount to the backside of a door or drawer, so only the front edge of the pull is visible when the door or drawer is closed. The front edge of these pulls has a small shape, usually either round or oval in shape that you can grasp with your fingers. Using this type of hardware allows you to maintain that clean modern minimal kitchen design, plus it adds just a small, but elegant “pop” of color to your cabinets. It is the perfect finishing touch. Benefits of aluminum edge pulls.

All of our back mount edge pulls are made from lightweight but durable aluminum, and again I’ll explain why. For an edge pull to work, it has to be thin. There is very little room for clearance between drawers and doors. So we use aluminum extrusions, which can be made thin, lightweight and strong. It is the perfect material for this application. And plus, being made from aluminum, they are recyclable, and therefore earth-friendly. You can shop our extensive edge pulls offering.

How do you mount edge pulls on cabinets?

Edge pulls are unique in that they mount only from the back side of the drawer or door. There is no hole drilled all the way through the cabinet surface as is typical for most cabinet hardware applications. A wood thread screw is used to secure the edge pull to the back of the drawer. This is beneficial, because if later you wish to change your hardware look and design, your doors and drawers are clean, a blank unblemished canvas upon which you have multiple options for mounting future hardware. The illustration below demonstrates how you mount edge pulls on cabinets.

Long or short edge pulls?

Edge pulls are the embodiment of simplicity, keeping kitchens and cabinets looking sleek.

In the photos above, you can see examples of using either short edge pulls or long edge pulls. The industry jargon for this is called “single trim” or “double trim”. If you use the shorter length edge pulls, you would typically use two per drawer. In this case, you can easily grasp longer drawers with two hands to open it. The single trim option would normally use a very long edge pull, mounted in the center of the drawer, that has a lot of area to grasp. It also creates a dramatic and stunning visual look. There is no right or wrong way to utilize these different lengths, it is up to your personal taste. Plus many kitchens have drawers and doors of different sizes, so it is not uncommon to use edge pulls of different lengths, according to drawer size.

Cabinet and door edge pulls are an important component to effortlessly enhance your modern kitchen for budget conscious homeowners. I hope that this article helped to shed some light as to why the cabinet and door edge pulls can be the perfect finishing touch to your modern kitchen!
