Gerald Holtom, a graduate from the Royal College of Art, designed it in 1958. Holtom constructed the peace symbol using a circle and the semaphoric letters N and D to represent the Untied Kingom¹s Campaign for Total Nuclear Disarmament.

Although the peace symbol debuted at the Britain ban-the-bomb rally on April 4, 1958, it truly became famous along side the 1960¹s American counter-culture revolution. In recent years, the peace sign has made a resurgent comeback in popular culture.
